Matthew Peters

Matt specializes in litigating business disputes and putative class actions of all types, including claims asserted under contracts; various state and federal marketing, privacy and unfair competition laws; and other consumer protection statutes. Beyond the courtroom, Matt advises clients on pre-litigation and litigation avoidance issues, including compliance with various consumer protection statutes, drafting and negotiating commercial contracts in consumer-facing areas, and conducting an advising on internal investigations.

Drawing on his experience in both private practice and in-house roles, Matt enjoys serving as a business advisor to his clients. Before joining WT, he was the associate general counsel for a diversified family of companies operating in the e-commerce, consumer goods, franchising, technology, and food industries. There, he led the legal department as interim general counsel, advised senior executives on strategic legal matters, spearheaded compliance initiatives, and managed high-stakes litigation related to commercial contracts, intellectual property, copyright infringement, trade secret misappropriation, and employment disputes, among others.

Matt graduated magna cum laude in the top 10% of his class from the University of Mississippi School of Law, where he was an Associate Articles Editor for the Mississippi Law Journal, a member of the Dean’s Leadership Council, and a member of the Negotiation Board. He placed 2nd nationally at the 2014 National Sports Law Negotiation Competition in San Diego, California. Matt was admitted to the Mississippi bar prior to graduation, having passed the bar exam while still a full-time student. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accountancy, summa cum laude, from Mississippi State University’s Adkerson School of Accountancy.

A passionate advocate for entrepreneurship, Matt actively supports emerging business owners on a pro bono basis. He is also a member of the Historic Oakland Foundation and enjoys volunteering for various events at Oakland Cemetery.
